PRACTICAL ADVICE
Replace the roofline properly rather than hiding damaged timber
Capping sound timber can sometimes be appropriate when the specification allows it, but covering rotten or badly damaged boards leaves weak material behind the new finish. The condition of the existing fascia and rafter ends needs checking before the method is agreed.
Soffit ventilation also needs attention. Some roof spaces rely on airflow at the eaves to manage moisture. Blocking that route with an unventilated replacement can create a hidden problem, so ventilation requirements should be considered alongside the appearance of the boards.
Gutters need enough fall and support to move water without sagging. The number and position of outlets matter too. A replacement length will not solve overflowing caused by a blocked drain, an undersized outlet or water from several roof areas being directed into one short section.

What is the difference between a fascia and a soffit?
The fascia is the board facing out at the roof edge and usually supports the gutter. The soffit closes the underside between the fascia and wall.
Can you replace the guttering without replacing the fascias?
Yes, if the fascia is sound, securely fixed and suitable for the new brackets. Damaged boards may need repair or replacement first.
Do you repair leaking gutters?
Yes. Leaks can come from failed seals, open joints, cracks, poor alignment or blocked outlets. We inspect the cause before recommending repair or replacement.
Should old timber fascias be covered with uPVC?
That depends on their condition and the proposed system. Rotten or weakened timber should not simply be hidden beneath a new cover.
Can you add ventilation when replacing soffits?
Suitable eaves ventilation can be included where the roof construction requires it. The correct approach depends on the existing roof and insulation.
